I have been on Paxil for almost 8 years now.  Before I went on it, I liked to drink alcohol quite a bit socially, but never to the point of where I thought I had a problem.  Since I went on meds, I have noticed a tremendous increase in my cravings for alcohol.  I want to drink 2-3 times a week, and when I do, I'm talking binge time (10-15 beers over a 6-8 hour period).  Has anyone else noticed this phenomena?

I used to drink a bit on Paxil....I don't drink these days because of my baby, aside from the occasional glass of wine.  I will watch out for this when I go back on meds. I don't know if it is 'dangerous', but it can't be healthy when alcohol is a depressant. I know from experience that smoking marijuana on medication can be very dangerous.

I had a very serious alcohol addiction in years past.It is so soothing for anxiety and easily becomes a need rather than a simple desire.Have you ever taken a self-test to see if your habits and desires would label you as an alcoholic? I am sorry to say this, but you sound pretty much borderline, and it could get worse. I can not drink at all anymore, not even one beer or I would be right back where I was in a wink...it felt way too good to be free in that way.I think you sorta know it's a problem , right?P.S. None of what I said is meant in an unkind or judgemental spirit....Sometimes it's hard to read feellings online...but I am concerned. What does that beautiful wife think?

If your on a medication program, you aren't suppost to drink, take any OTC medications, or and thing that can affect you mentally. That includes caffine. You need to be in contact with your psychaitrist. SSRIs and other medications for OCD take about 12 weeks to build in your system, and alchohol, caffine, nicotine can have bad affects. You need to be careful because many of these meds can affect your central nervous systom and pheriphrial nervous systom. Since I been on my meds, even if i take a tylenol, i call my doctor first.

Thanks all......I have mentioned it to my doctor and he has said that I should slow way down.  He did say that there is no conclusive evidence that it is physically harmful, but it absolutely does intensify the effects of the SSRI (further impairing judgement).

When you say you are binge drinking it is because you literally crave the taste of alcohol or you feel like you need to get away from how you are feeling? I have had some odd cravings on medications but not alcohol. I had one medication that caused me to give up soda completely because it made the soda taste horrible while I was on it. Xanax sometimes gives me the munchies...but the last person was right about drinking with SSRI's - it can be really dangerous. If you aren't careful you could end up with a worse problem like a seizure or some other bad effect. I would talk to your doctor about it.

Barkley... Hey be really careful here. Read the information that came with your medication...you should not drink. That can be very dangerous...if your binge drinking you have an issue. I know...I've been there.Your probably just self medicating. Please talk to your doctor about this. If you want to talk more...message me. Be well. Blue
