Where do you draw the line?

Between what is a compulsion via relief-seeking and what is legitimate concern for relief? For example, if you write down an obsessive thought or tell someone the thought to get it out of your head, or maybe just to relieve the anxiety (or both), is it a positive act or a negative one? I'm sort of realizing the answer as I type this. I think it depends on your motives. The degree of panic which goes with needed to release the anxiety and the frequency of such urges. But I like the word "release." Is there a difference between releasing anxiety and relief-seeking?

Thank you. I was sort of afraid you'd say that. I like having options, but it seems the only option is to hold off giving into ritualizing for dear life, which of course creates more anxiety. It's just a frustrating truth. My therapist is encouraging me to practice examining cognitive distortions, but I fail to see how this applies to OCD. I'm already aware of the distorted nature of OCD and obsessive thinking. Examining cognitive distortions seems irrelevant.
